Home Stretch with Life of Pi

We are down to the last week of classes.  It doesn’t feel like December — it’s cold and gray and rainy. But little snow.  As always, it’s crunch time, with papers everywhere I look.  Obviously, I’m not going to get many new projects done this month, but I am looking forward to the time after the holidays when everything slows down just a bit.

In the last few days, I did, however, make time to re-read Life of Pi by Yann Martel and am really curious about the movie.  I read Martel’s novel many years ago, and when I saw the previews, I thought, Uh oh…This is just not going to work.  I am very skeptical. Even  Director Ang Lee has been quoted about the movie: “When I first read Life of Pi…I remember thinking that nobody in his right mind would make this into a movie.”   Still, the reviews have been solid, so I may have to take a break from the end of the semester grading to catch this movie.  (Although, if Anthony has his way, we will be going to see The Hobbit instead.)

Hello, Weekend!

One would think that since the regular semester is over, that I would have more time to blog, but that hasn’t been the case.  I’ve spent the week finishing up spring semester’s business.  Plus, I started my summer creative writing class.  Also, Anthony and I have taken advantage of the nice weather to get some yardwork done.  I’ve also been trying to catch up with my reading and writing (and revising!)  I do, however, have some good news to report. Yesterday, I got an acceptance note from Cati Porter, the wonderful editor-in-chief of Poemeleon.  My poem, “Dear Suzy’s Bar & Grill” will appear in the next issue, which is dedicated to the epistolary form.

I also got my contrbutor’s copy of Sugar House Review, where my poem, “Crow Season” joins work by Liz Robbins, Kate Greenstreet, and Jenn Blair (among others).  Thanks to all the members of the Sugar House Review staff for such a beautiful literary journal!

Finally, special thanks goes to Jessie Carty who wrote a review of Wearing Heels on her blog!  Remember, (insert shameless self-promotion here), you can get your own copy (for $10 including shipping and handling) by dropping me a note at

Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

Welcome, Winter Break!

Papers are graded, final grades are in.  I’m not officially on break, quite yet — tomorrow I will go in and clean my office, but then I am free for three weeks.  I do plan on making this winter break a working break — that is finish some poems, write some reviews, and get my manuscript ready so it can go out into the world in 2010.

In the meantime, I will also be catching up on all my reading, especially a few early Christmas presents (poetry books, of course) that came in the mail today.  I also have a small stack of books about writing pedagogy that I want to explore.  And speaking of pedagogy, I know that the Internet has been flooded with December sales, but I found one bargain that can’t be beat.  Check out Teachers & Writers Collaborative, which is having a sale — $8 per book — during the month of December.  I’ve already put my order in.
